An 18-year-old who left school early without qualifications and was struggling to find his way is now building a career in construction after a successful work experience at one of our constructions sites; Leighton Dene housing scheme.
Paul Owens left school in Year 10, was unable to get into college to do his GCSEs and was not enjoying his first apprenticeship in grounds maintenance.
The turning point came when he found the Kaplan Construction Traineeship while searching the internet. The 12 week programme included 4 weeks at Leighton Danes Dene, during which time Paul impressed our groundworks partner M Logans and Sons, so much that they offered him a position as a full-time trainee.
Paul, who quickly became one of their team, believes the opportunity has made a huge difference to his life. He said:
“I have a much better income and as a result as I have been able to move into a new house with my girlfriend and 8-month-old son. We were living with my parents before so our relationship has improved and the income helps us to get the things we need.”
