As we approach the halfway mark for our 2030 sustainability strategy, one thing is clear: sustainability isn’t just the right thing to do - it’s driving our business forward.
From record-breaking progress on low-carbon buildings to significant reductions in emissions and waste, our sustainability performance in 2024 speaks for itself.
Our pipeline of sustainable projects has never been stronger. The order book for net-zero and Passivhaus schemes now stands at an impressive £947m - a 450% increase since 2020. We command a 29% share of the non-domestic Passivhaus market in England and Wales, which reflects the confidence our customers have in our ability to deliver high performing buildings.
Of course, it’s not just about what we deliver but how we deliver it. Sustainability is embedded in everything we do - from the way we collaborate with supply chain partners to how we help customers use less carbon in the construction and operation of their buildings.
By implementing changes to the way we work and carefully measuring our impact, we can show that we’ve cut absolute carbon emissions by 57% and waste by 33% since 2018. That’s one of the reasons we’ve earned our place on the Carbon Disclosure Project’s (CDP) prestigious ‘A List’, putting us in the top 2% of companies worldwide for transparency and accountability.
But sustainability isn’t just about reducing climate impact – it's about creating lasting legacies for our communities. We work closely with our customers to understand their local priorities and develop impactful programmes, which go beyond bricks and mortar. In 2024 alone, our projects generated £410m in social return on investment, with 80% of our people volunteering their time. And with 92% of beneficiaries reporting a high impact from our programmes, the difference we are making is tangible.
As we approach this midpoint in our strategy, we’re not just meeting targets - we're setting new industry standards. Sustainable construction is gaining momentum, and our leadership in this space is strengthening our business. Looking ahead to 2030, we know that progress isn’t guaranteed and is likely to get harder. But everything we’ve achieved so far tells us we’re on the right path – growing our business, shaping our industry and making a real difference for our customers, communities and environment.
