Upskilling through apprenticeships

Sophie Gawin joins Amy, Aaron and Olivia in explaining how an apprenticeship is fast-tracking their career with us.

Sophie Gawin is currently at management trainee in London and is studying an apprenticeship in Construction Site Management Level 6. She explains about choosing an apprenticeship.

Why did you choose this apprenticeship?

I chose this apprenticeship because I was excited about the opportunity to learn on the job, and complete placements around the business to learn about each discipline. I liked the idea of having a degree, all whilst receiving support from my colleagues and having the costs of my degree fully covered.

How did you get the opportunity to work at Willmott Dixon?

I expressed my interest in construction to my school’s careers advisor, who provided me with a list of companies, including Willmott Dixon. A family friend, aware of my interest, also mentioned seeing an opportunity at Willmott Dixon, so I researched the company and decided to apply.

What do you enjoy about working for Willmott Dixon?

I gained a lot from my placements, where different departments within the company took the time to help me understand each discipline. This has enhanced my overall knowledge and my enjoyment of working closely and collaborating within a team. I also enjoy the trainee events, providing the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities, communicating with trainees across the whole business.

How has studying for this apprenticeship helped you in your role so far?

Studying for this apprenticeship has helped me improve my time management, balancing tasks, and organisational skills. All of which are essential qualities for effectively managing a team on a day-to-day basis as a trainee preconstruction project manager.

What do you hope to do differently following your apprenticeship?

As a result of my apprenticeship, I hope to further build on the confidence I’ve already gained throughout the years at my job, whilst expanding my knowledge to communicate more effectively with colleagues, supply chain, and customers.

Do you have any thoughts on the value of an apprenticeship towards a long-term career?

I believe an apprenticeship can provide great value for building a long-term career. I’m fortunate to have my degree fully funded by the company through the apprenticeship, allowing me to graduate debt free. Additionally, I have a secure role that allows me to apply my knowledge directly to my work, helping me grow professionally while gaining practical experience on the job.

Amy Baber is an assistant social value manager who is studying an apprenticeship in Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability Practitioner to level 4. She explains more:

Why did you choose this apprenticeship?

I felt this apprenticeship was well aligned with my role and I wanted to gain a better understanding of sustainability as a whole.

How did you get the opportunity to work at Willmott Dixon?

In 2016 I applied to be a Social Value administrator at Willmott Dixon. My auntie was a Health & Safety manager at the company at the time so when she suggested it I thought; why not! I had been wanting to get out of my role in retail for some time. Initially I had no experience, so the company suggested I complete an apprenticeship to upskill whilst on the job. I therefore started a Business Admin apprenticeship on placement at Willmott Dixon for one year. Nine years on, I am still thoroughly enjoying my role as well as now being registered for a second apprenticeship!

What do you enjoy about working for Willmott Dixon?

Every day is different. My role is so varied, and I am so lucky to work with such wonderful people who are experts in their field. Working in social value allows me to work with all departments from pre-con to operations, also work with our customers. I manage and run events, work with students, helping to upskill them about the construction industry, work with our customers and local communities to understand local need.

How has studying for this apprenticeship helped you in your role so far?

It has allowed me to gain a better understanding of social value and sustainability. Learning different aspects through my apprenticeship has helped me understand my role better.

What do you hope to do differently following your apprenticeship?

I will be able to support the team better as a result of my training. I will also use my knowledge to help my projects where needed.

Do you have any thoughts on the value of an apprenticeship towards a long-term career?

Having completed two apprenticeships during my time at Willmott Dixon I think they are imperative in building a long-term career. You are able to learn and earn as well as gain key industry experience.

Aaron Coburn is a management trainee who is studying a Construction Site Supervisor apprenticeship to level 4. He explains more:

Why did you choose this apprenticeship?

I chose this apprenticeship because I wanted to gain practical experience in a real-world setting while also learning from professionals in the field. I’m keen to develop both my technical skills and my understanding of the industry, and I believe an apprenticeship is the best way to do that.

How did you get the opportunity to work at Willmott Dixon?

I came across the advertisement for the trainee project manager position on Indeed and was immediately drawn to the role due to its alignment with my career aspirations and interests. As a result, I decided to submit my application.

What do you enjoy about working for Willmott Dixon?

I really enjoy working for Willmott Dixon because of the company’s strong focus on innovation, sustainability, and its commitment to creating a positive impact within the community. The collaborative work environment fosters personal and professional growth, and I appreciate the opportunities for development and progression within the company. I also admire Willmott Dixon’s reputation for delivering high-quality projects, which motivates me to continually strive for excellence in my own work.

How has studying for this apprenticeship helped you in your role so far?

Studying for this apprenticeship has been invaluable in supporting my role. The knowledge and skills I’ve gained through both the academic and practical components have directly enhanced my ability to contribute to projects effectively. The apprenticeship has provided me with a deeper understanding of industry standards, project management techniques, and problem-solving strategies, which I’ve been able to apply to real-world tasks. This combination of theory and hands-on experience has helped me develop a more structured approach to my work and improved my confidence in tackling new challenges.

What do you hope to be able to do differently as a result of your apprenticeship?

As a result of my apprenticeship, I hope to develop a deeper level of expertise in project management and be able to approach tasks with greater efficiency and confidence. I aim to apply the knowledge I’ve gained to improve my decision-making, streamline processes, and contribute more effectively to team collaboration. Additionally, I hope to take on more responsibility in managing projects from start to finish, ensuring they are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest standard.

Do you have any thoughts on the value of an apprenticeship towards a long-term career?

I believe an apprenticeship is a highly valuable stepping stone for long-term career growth. It provides not only practical experience but also the opportunity to build industry-specific skills and knowledge that are crucial for long-term success. Apprenticeships allow individuals to gain hands-on learning while earning qualifications, making them well-prepared for future roles. Additionally, the professional networks built during an apprenticeship can open doors to future career opportunities, as they give you a chance to prove your abilities and commitment. Overall, I see an apprenticeship as an investment in both personal development and career progression.

Olivia Tritton is a management trainee who is studying a Data Technician apprenticeship to level 3. She explains more:

Why did you choose this apprenticeship?

I completed a course at university that touched on Data, Information, and Knowledge. I saw this apprenticeship as a great opportunity to build on my skills in this area and gain a deeper understanding of how to apply what I learn in my everyday role and develop skills to make data-driven decisions.

How did you get the opportunity to work at Willmott Dixon?

I initially began my journey at Willmott Dixon Interiors working as a receptionist at the Interiors office in a temporary position, as I had planned to go travelling. I really enjoyed my time at Interiors, so I made a point of staying in touch with people here, with the hope of returning. Unfortunately, my travels were cut short due to COVID-19, but after a few months, a position became available within the support team at Interiors and I seized the opportunity to join.

What do you enjoy about working for Willmott Dixon?

The people I work with and the support they give me throughout my role and my data apprenticeship.

How has studying for this apprenticeship helped you in your role so far?

Studying for this apprenticeship has greatly complemented my role as assistant data analyst, equipping me with new skills that I can apply daily. The knowledge gained from my apprenticeship has been directly relevant to my tasks, allowing me to demonstrate strong examples of my learning and effectively incorporate these insights into my work.

What do you hope to do differently following your apprenticeship?

I hope to use my apprenticeship to support the business in making data-driven decisions. My aim is to ensure solutions to problems are based on reliable, high-quality data. As data is such a crucial asset for any business, I want to apply the knowledge and skills I gain to promote its use within Interiors and contribute to fostering a more data-driven approach across the organisation overall.

Do you have any thoughts on the value of an apprenticeship towards a long-term career?

I believe an apprenticeship is highly valuable for a long-term career. It allows you to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting, while receiving guidance from a mentor to help you grow both personally and professionally. An apprenticeship that is aligned with the goals of the business is particularly beneficial, as it not only helps you develop your own skills but also demonstrates your value within the organisation. These skills can also be transferable to other roles in the future, further enhancing your career prospects.
