With deep understanding of security requirements, confidentiality protocols, and the unique operational needs of emergency services, we're the partner you can rely on for your most critical projects.

Building safe, secure facilities for those who protect our communities

When public safety depends on your infrastructure, you need a partner who understands the operational, security and confidentiality demands of a live emergency-services environment. Across England and Wales we deliver police headquarters, custody suites, fire and rescue stations, courts and custodial facilities that are secure, efficient and built around the people who keep communities safe, from new-build flagship headquarters to the sensitive refurbishment of heritage buildings.

Our recent blue light programme spans major new police headquarters, purpose-built custody and operational bases, and net zero fire stations, many designed to the highest environmental and wellbeing standards, including WELL and BREEAM.

Major track record in major police headquarters

Forces are increasingly bringing district, investigation and custody functions together in single, modern buildings, and we have delivered some of the sector’s largest recent headquarters schemes.

Hertfordshire Constabulary HQ, Welwyn Garden City: A £55m, four-storey new headquarters built on the site of the existing HQ, supporting more than 500 personnel. Designed to achieve WELL Platinum and BREEAM Excellent - placing it among the top 10% of sustainable buildings nationally - it features a biophilic central atrium with a glulam timber feature roof and air source heat pumps.

Kirklees Police Headquarters, Dewsbury: A six-storey, 10,464m² district headquarters for West Yorkshire Police, bringing district policing, investigation and custody together in one all-electric building. It includes a Category A, 30-cell custody suite built to the latest Home Office guidelines. At its heart, the 1880s Oldroyd building has been fully refurbished and retained, a demanding integration of Victorian heritage into a modern, secure blue light facility.

Merseyside Police HQ (Rose Hill), Liverpool: A purpose-built, four-storey headquarters bringing more than 1,100 Merseyside Police officers and staff together under one roof at a key gateway to the city centre. We have also delivered new headquarters for Dorset Police (BREEAM Very Good) and Humberside Police, alongside a purpose-built learning centre for South Wales Police.

Modern custody and operational bases

Cambridgeshire South Police Station, Cambridge: A new, purpose-built policing hub on land adjoining Milton Park & Ride, replacing the force’s outdated 1960s Parkside station. At its heart is a 24-cell custody suite, double the capacity of Parkside, with medical and interview facilities, secure detainee movement routes and clearly segregated public and staff zones, plus enhanced accommodation to investigate complex crimes such as fraud and online offences. Air source heat pumps, roof-mounted solar and a fabric-first design target an approximate 50% reduction in energy use, supporting the Constabulary’s ambition to reach Net Zero by 2035.

This adds to a long track record of custody and operational facilities delivered for forces across the country, including a new custody suite for Bedfordshire Police.

Custodial Excellence: Expanding Capacity, Enhancing Security

Prison capacity challenges require specialist expertise. Our work with the National Offender Management Service demonstrates our ability to expand custodial facilities efficiently while maintaining the highest security standards.

Major custodial expansions include:

  • HMP Nottingham – Secure capacity expansion supporting regional requirements
  • HMP Swaleside – Enhanced facilities improving operational efficiency
  • HMP Lindholme – Modern additions supporting rehabilitation programs

Combined impact: Over 2,000 additional custodial places created, enhancing the justice system's capacity to protect communities while supporting offender rehabilitation.

Court Facilities: Justice Delivered Efficiently

Justice requires environments that support fair, efficient proceedings. Our court construction expertise balances security, accessibility, and operational efficiency to create facilities that serve both the justice system and the communities they protect.

Notable court projects:

  • Award-winning Loughborough Courthouse – Recognised for excellence in judicial facility design
  • Kingston Court Facilities – Modern facilities supporting efficient case processing

Sustainability, wellbeing and top environmental ratings

Environmental and wellbeing performance is now central to blue light procurement, and our recent projects set a high benchmark:

  • WELL Platinum and BREEAM Excellent at Hertfordshire Constabulary HQ - the top 10% of sustainable buildings nationally
  • BREEAM Very Good at Cambridgeshire South Police Station and Dorset Police HQ
  • Net zero in operation at Bath Fire Station
  • All-electric design with on-site PV at Kirklees Police HQ

Across these schemes we apply air source heat pumps, low-carbon M&E, fabric-first design, sustainable drainage and photovoltaics to cut operational emissions and running costs - and we can measure and optimise performance in use through our Energy Synergy® building performance service.

New build and heritage refurbishment

Modern policing estates often combine the two: a new, secure, energy-efficient building alongside the retention of a valued older structure.

At Kirklees, the 19th-century Oldroyd building - the one part of the former college site worth keeping - now sits at the centre of the new headquarters, meeting the same security, resilience and energy-performance standards as the new build without losing its character.

It is a clear demonstration of our combined new-build and refurbishment capability in secure environments.
