Middlesbrough Sports Village
"iconic sports destination" for Middlesbrough
Willmott Dixon recently delivered six new schools for Middlesbrough as part of its BSF programme and this Sports Village sees the company continue its work with the council to transform the town’s community infrastructure.
Middlesbrough Sports Village is a top-class venue for local, regional and national level competition in sports such as athletics, cycling, basketball, futsal, netball, roller hockey, rugby and football.
Current Middlesbrough Mayor Dave Budd:
"The Sports Village will raise the capacity for sports throughout Middlesbrough and wider region. It will also contribute to health development and allow participation across a variety of sports. I’d like to thank Willmott Dixon for not only completing the Sports Village in time but for contributing to several worthy community causes along the way."
Our work included a polymeric 400 metre eight lane floodlit athletics track and spectator grandstand, full sized all-weather football pitch and a four 5-a-side football pitches. As part of the second phase, a 250m outdoor velodrome will complement the existing track facilities.
Local spend
Working alongside architect Enjoy Design and procured through Scape, a big focus for Willmott Dixon was on the ‘local pound’, with a work going to 60% of companies within a 20 mile radius of the project.
Paul Ayre, service manager for Middlesbrough Council’s Sport and Leisure Service:
“There are two main aims for the sports village - we want to increase participation in sport for everyone in the town, alongside the great work we already do at our leisure centres, the golf course and other places. And we also want to create champions. The facilities at the sports village will be elite level, and I think it is important we recognise that potential and try and develop it."
Features we built include:
- Athletics field and stadium with 400m track with 10-lane straight
- Four 5-aside Synthetic Turf Pitches (STP)
- Full size flood lit STP which can accommodate a football or rugby pitch as well as three 7-aside pitches
- Multi function fitness suite and gym
- Indoor sprint track
- 250m outdoor Velodrome
