Funding action to decarbonise property

How can we help green finance ensure the UK meets its decarbonisation commitments? Andrew Dobb shares our recent industry discussions.

At Willmott Dixon, we constantly listen to our customers. One item firmly on their agenda is net zero – and importantly how we finance the action required to meet targets and tackle climate change.

To get the best insight, we arranged a series of discussions with people from across the industry on how to improve the flow of finance to decarbonise property.

They highlighted the absolute determination to decarbonise and share learning. The main focus was securing and matching green finance to deliver the most suitable and effective means of decarbonising and improving building stock energy efficiency.

Of all the sectors to decarbonise, buildings are the most complex, owing to a combination of age, materials, owners, interested parties and building types. Successful decarbonising means lowering energy demand. We also need more efficient heating and electrical devices – such as heat pumps and solar panels - and behavioural changes by occupiers. And the cost of this will be considerable.

So what did our discussions achieve that moves this dial? Our White Paper sets this out, including the current situation on public and private finance, with several recommendations in more detail.
