Kibworth Recycling and Household Waste Site
Modernising, expanding and improving the facilities available
After completing Bardon Waste Transfer station for Leicestershire County council, our team have delivered Kibworth Recycling and Household Waste Site for the council, too.
These projects underpin Leicestershire County Council’s commitment to improve household waste services in the local area.
Delivering improved facilities
The new split-level site comprises of bulk storage areas, waste bin locations, access ramps, and a weighbridge. There is also an office and welfare unit which includes energy saving technologies such as automated LED lighting, and electric vehicle charging points will be available for staff to use. There are also solar panels on the roof to help generate electricity.
The new office space makes use of autoated LED lighting.
The design of the site allows for improved recycling facilities, as it is now much easier to seperate different materials from one another.
Features to make using the facility easier have also been incorporated, such as removing the need for users to climb steps to dispose of their waste - instead, there is now step-free access to skips.
The new facility also boasts improved drainage and better traffic flow.
Health and safety has also been a key focus for this project. The new layout provides improved segregation of HGV and pedestrian traffic, ensuring safer access for site users.
Initiatives in the local community
Throughout the project, a number of initiatives were undertaken to help give back to the local community.
Local groups of cubs, scouts and beavers went on a tour of the site.
Over two evenings, we welcomed 50 cubs, 50 scouts and 80 beavers to come and find out about the project. The visitors viewed plans and drawings in the site office then took a tour to learn about the various methods being used on the project.
Our site team also read a book about recycling to the children, and they all took copies home. The story is about three plastic bottles and the importance of recycling. It was created by by Professor Gatrad MBE and we helped to fund its publication.
Once the site was completed, we donated the site’s defibrillator to a local group – the 1st Kibworth Scout Group. The potentially life-saving piece of equipment can increase survival rates from cardiac arrest by over 40%.
Representatives from the 1st Kibworth Scout Group came to site to collect the donation
We also held a careers day where local organisations, including employment charities, came together to help those in the local community seeking work. CVs were dropped off, potential apprenticeship placements made and there was even a sign-up for an NVQ course!
Organisations from across Leicestershire came together to support local people in finding work
Councillor Blake Pain, cabinet member for the environment and the green agenda at Leicestershire County Council, said:
“We have invested a substantial amount in the rebuilding of the Kibworth Recycling and Household Waste Site to create a modern facility which is safer, better and easier to use for customers.
“The new and improved Kibworth site has been designed to be a best practice facility that will look and function as a modern, safe and sustainable waste and recycling site should. It will also allow us to increase the amount of waste we recycle and reduce the amount being sent to landfill.
“Sustainability has been at the heart of our rebuild, with solar panels and LED lighting used throughout the site as part of our ongoing commitment to tackle the climate crisis and work towards becoming a net zero county by 2045.”
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
Transforming the site to make it more user friendly, embedding health and safety measures, and utilising sustainable elements.
