In Solihull, we are building a new generation of net zero, social rented homes in Kingshurst. Here, we have created the Kingshurst Construction Training Hub to help individuals secure sustainable employment in the construction industry.
Working with RMF Training Group, customer SMBC (Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council) and SCH (Solihull Community Housing), we delivered seven Building Lives Academies directly on site focused on groundworks or brick work. The Academy participants were young people who were not in education, employment or training and residents who were long-term unemployed or ex-offenders. They were offered the practical skills training and experience needed to open to the door to future employment in the industry.
Over the four-week course, individuals have attended skills and employability workshops, created CVs, had mock interviews and gained on-site work experience. They have also had the opportunity to gain their Level 1 Health and Safety qualification and CSCS Card.
One of the program’s participants, Nathan Williams, said: “The skills and experience I have gained from the Kingshurst Construction Training Hub have been the foot in the door I needed into the construction industry. I still have plenty to learn, but this course has given me the confidence to take the next step and find my own career path within the industry. I’d encourage anyone who has thought about getting into construction but wasn’t sure where to start to take a look.”
Having completed the groundwork course and gained his CSCS card, Nathan has already secured a job with the training provider RMF and will be helping to pass on his newfound skills and knowledge to future cohorts.
Councillor Karen Grinsell, Deputy Leader of Solihull Council and Portfolio Holder for Skills and Employment Support, said: “The Kinghurst construction training hub is already unlocking local opportunities, for those looking to take their first steps into the construction industry.
“Tackling unemployment locally is something we are determined to address head-on, that’s why we have launched this training hub in Kingshurst and are ensuring it’s accessible to the residents who can benefit the most from it. In addition to practical skills for the industry, learners will benefit from employability training that will be useful for exploring careers in all industries.”
Working closely with Solihull Council, we have continued to track the progress of those who attended, ensuring long-term support. Here are the latest outcomes from the program:
- 29 participants across seven cohorts
- 9 individuals successfully gained employment
- 16 participants achieved their CSCS card
- 23 attendees completed Level 1 Health & Safety training
