Redcar Community Heart

Redcar and Cleveland's Leisure and Community Heart is a £33 million leisure, business support and community facility. This is an excellent example of how Willmott Dixon and Scape combined to delivered a transformational project in the heart of Redcar that has boosted the local economy.

The town centre regeneration project includes a six-lane, 25-metre swimming pool, training and leisure pool, dance hall and performance space, and community facilities including a debating chamber and relocated registrars office.

Alongside is a business centre for entrepreneurs and start-up companies, plus improved car parking.

We also built the 80ft vertical pier on the seafront, Redcar Beacon, which is a major landmark and tourist attraction for the region.

This dedicated civic hub, alongside a state of-the-art leisure centre containing three pools and an innovative flow-rider, is a model for inward investment that is being followed by other local authorities.

Challenges and innovations

Materials were selected for their durability, due to the close proximity of the coast.

Perforated mesh aluminium solar shading was installed on the east and west elevations, also helping the building's energy performance.
