Our core belief is that no one should suffer from ill health, (physical or mental) or an accident at work.
Our accident frequency rate is calculated against hours worked. In 2020, our rate increased by 0.01, with around one million less hours worked. We also saw a 29% reduction in service strike incidents.

The pandemic has meant a dramatic change in the way we all work. Our people on site have come to terms with new ways of working and continued to deliver outstanding projects while maintaining strict social distancing. Those who are office based have been working from home, many of whom have been coming to terms with home-schooling or caring for vulnerable family and friends. These have been challenging times and supporting the health and wellbeing of our people has been key. We increased support for our people through HR drop-in sessions, line management training, resilience, wellbeing and anxiety training and launched ‘Thrive’, an app to support self-managed wellbeing.
In 2020 we continued with our ‘All Safe Minds’ campaign, which aims to combat the stigma associated with mental illness and encourages our people, and those we work with, to seek help if they are experiencing mental health issues, such as stress or depression. 377 of our people are trained as mental health first aiders, and we have several mental health first aider trainers in the business.
